How do I get the ABS sensor light off?
Resetting Your ABS Dashboard Warning Light
Step One: Disconnect the positive cable from your car battery. Then, hold down the brake pedal to drain the vehicle's electrical system. This will result in a reset of the car's central computer. Plug the cable back in to restore power.
An ABS warning light that comes on and stays on could signal a problem with various components in and related to the anti-lock brakes. For instance, special sensors monitor the speed of the wheels. If one or more of these wheel speed sensors are inoperative or defective, the ABS warning light will remain on.
When the ABS Warning Light becomes illuminated on your instrument cluster it could mean that your vehicle requires service to repair the braking system. When the ABS Warning Light is on it is recommended that you have the vehicle immediately inspected by your Toyota dealer.
It Might Be the ABS
Unfortunately, the only way to check whether or not the problem is with the ABS is to go and get the codes of your car read. AutoZone can scan your codes as part of our Fix Finder service, or you can do it yourself if you already have a scan tool.
In many vehicles, if you look to the bottom left or right of your steering wheel, you will see the traction control button. Sometimes it will say “off” under the image, and in other cars, it will show a light indicating whether the traction control is on or off.
The ABS light will reset itself only when the ABS controller runs and passes all self tests. It does not need and, for the most part, cannot be reset by other means.
If your ABS light comes on individually, you are safe to drive your car to your destination, as your normal brakes will still work. You will, of course, have to be more careful as your ABS will not respond in case of an emergency.
Yes, in a somewhat indirect way. As we've mentioned, your car's ABS light can be triggered by low brake fluid. Worn brake pads deplete your brake fluid. By doing this, they can trigger your car's ABS light.
The ABS light (usually yellow, amber or orange) should come on briefly every time you start your car as part of a system check. If the light stays on, that means something isn't working and the system has been shut down. With ABS, sensors mounted at each wheel monitor the speed at which the wheels are turning.
No, it will disable the system and turn the ABS light on, your brakes will function as if it were a non ABS vehicle.
Where is ABS light sensor located?
Where are these sensors located? The ABS sensor is typically located in each wheel hub/rotor on a four channel ABS system. Some rear wheel drive applications have the sensor mounted in the rear differential.
General purpose OBD II scanners such as Autozone might have cannot read ABS system issues… there is a separate processor for that (and that's why it has a separate light from the CEL or MIL check engine light. So it cannot read and cannot reset ABS (or SRS either) codes and lights.
Is It Safe to Drive When the ABS Warning Light Is On? In general, you can still continue driving even if your car's ABS light is on. This is because your car's brakes still function as usual and can still slow your vehicle down.
Because the ABS and traction control often share the same module, a problem with one mechanism might be indicated by a light for both. If the brake system is malfunctioning, the traction control light might come on as a result. The light for your ABS might also come on if the brake fluid is low.
